Setup the Microsoft Authenticator App for MFA

1. An authenticator app is an app that adds Multi-factor authentication (MFA) to accounts you want to protect. The authenticator app establishes a secure connection between the authenticator app and your account.  With an authenticator app, the only way a hacker can access your account is if they physically have access to your phone.

This article will show you how to setup Microsoft Authenticator as your preferred method of MFA rather than a text message.

2. On your LAPTOP, Navigate to https://myaccount.microsoft.com/ and log in with your CAIU username & password.
3. A text message will be sent to the phone number registered for MFA.  Enter the code in the following prompt and click VERIFY.
 
4. Select Security info in the left menu or by using the link in the Security info pane. 
5. You'll be prompted again for two-factor verification.  Enter the code that was sent via text message to your cell phone and click VERIFY.
6. Then, select Add method in the Security info pane.
7. On the Add a method page, select Authenticator app from the drop-down list, and then select Add.

8. On the Start by getting the app page select Next

NOTE:  On your phone you will need to search and download the MICROSOFT AUTHENTICATOR app in the App Store (Apple) or Google Play (Android).

 

 

9. Remain on the Set up your account page while you set up the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device.
10. On your PHONE, open the Microsoft Authenticator app, select to allow notifications (if prompted), select Add account from the Customize and control icon on the upper-right, and then select Work or school account.  (You may need to verify your login with a MFA text message code to continue)
NOTE:  If this is the first time you're setting up the Microsoft Authenticator app, you might receive a prompt asking whether to allow the app to access your camera (iOS) or to allow the app to take pictures and record video (Android). You must select Allow so the authenticator app can access your camera to take a picture of the QR code in the next step. If you don't allow the camera, you can still set up the authenticator app, but you'll need to add the code information manually.
11. Return to the Set up your account page on your LAPTOP, and then select Next.

The Scan the QR code page appears.

12. On your PHONE, scan the provided code with the Microsoft Authenticator app QR code reader, which appeared on your mobile device after you created your work account.

The authenticator app should successfully add your work or school account without requiring any additional information from you. 

13. Select Next on the Scan the QR code page on your computer.
14. A notification is sent to the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device, to test your account.
15. Approve the notification in the Microsoft Authenticator app, and then select Next.
Your security info is updated to use the Microsoft Authenticator app by default to verify your identity when using two-step verification or password reset.
